How to support your local animal shelter – even when you’re broke!

With animal shelters flooding with unwanted animals, the demand for volunteer help is increasing by the day. In fact, many animal shelters would appreciate some free help. In many countries, contributions are accepted at most shelters and amazingly, your local animal shelter may be one of them. Some are of these animals are abandoned, others are dumped in surrounding neighborhoods while a few animals are neglected and found tied to trees in backyards. These animals are defenseless and require human intervention for their survival. It is our obligations to treat these animals as one of us as they can’t speak for themselves. If you have any concern for these animals there are certain things that you can do to support the wellbeing of animals in your local animal shelter.

Adopt your next pet from your local animal shelter

Animal shelters are a great place to get your favorite pet. Adopting a pet from your local animal shelter is a great way to support it. This way, you get to provide a better life for an animal and also supervise their behavior. You can spay and neuter your new cats, teach your new pet how to walk on a leash, purchase their favorite toys, and as well treating them with love and affection. By so doing, you will provide an animal with an improved life than it had before, as well as supporting the local animal shelter. When adopting, try to adopt when you have a long weekend or during your vacation, so you can give the animal the time and attention they need. When you adopt your next pet, you know you have done something to help your society. However, if you can’t get another pet there are other ways you can help!

Donate your time- Volunteer to help at your local animal shelter

One thing you have to put in mind is that shelters are always looking for volunteers. This is one of the most important ways to support your local animal shelter. Take note that being a volunteer to help at your local animal shelter doesn’t require you to have a veterinarian or have a specialized skill. You only need to build relationships with the animals, other volunteers, the people you are working with and the society. When you go to your local shelter, you will be surprised when you see other volunteers providing help with simple tasks such as walking the dogs, bathing and grooming the animals, and many other easy tasks. They essentially keep the organizations (animal shelter) running.

Always remember that the way you treat your pet and other animals says a lot about you and your society. Look for a local animal shelter and help an animal today. If you don’t know where to find one in your area, meet with your vet. #SaveAnAnimalToday

Donate your old items

Call your local shelter and check to see what items your local shelter is in need of. Many Shelters appreciate donations of old blankets, towels, toys and food. You can clean out your house of old things and help out the shelter at the same time.

Helping your local shelter will make you feel great and will be great for your community. Even if you don’t have money to give, you can be a great help by volunteering your time to help these animals.

What do you do to support your local shelter? Tell us about it in the comments!
